The Herschel Effect and Solar Photography
نویسنده
چکیده
A method of photographing the solar image in the UV part of the solar spectrum is described. The resulting images show the bright photospheric network of Sheeley and Chapman; these have been recorded at the small central distance of 20 ~ During a flare of importance lb near a spot group, no detectable changes in the spots, their relative positions or the bright photospheric network could be observed.

We present Herschel PACS 100 and 160 μm observations of the solar-type stars α Men, HD 88230 and HD 210277, which form part of the FGK stars sample of the Herschel open time key programme (OTKP) DUNES (DUst around NEarby S tars). Our observations show small infrared excesses at 160 μm for all three stars. HD 210277 also shows a small excess at 100 μm, while the 100 μm fluxes of α Men and HD 882...
متن کاملBook Review: Galactic Encounters
" Galactic Encounters " by Sheehan and Conselice provides a view of galaxies telling the story of how astronomers have pieced together what is known about the modern view of the Universe. The book helps the reader to understand " why " we know what we do, not simply " what, " starting with the development of the telescope that coincides with the modern picture of the Universe. William Sheehan i...
متن کاملA Thermodynamic History of the Solar Constitution — I: The Journey to a Gaseous Sun
History has the power to expose the origin and evolution of scientific ideas. How did humanity come to visualize the Sun as a gaseous plasma? Why is its interior thought to contain blackbody radiation? Who were the first people to postulate that the density of the solar body varied greatly with depth? When did mankind first conceive that the solar surface was merely an illusion? What were the f...
متن کاملThe Herschel Heritage to Medical Thermography
The discovery of infrared radiation by William Herschel in 1800 led to John Herschel’s study of solar radiation that he imaged by evaporography. This he termed a thermogram. The measurement of temperature in medicine advanced with Dr Carl Wunderlich, who showed the significance of the use of temperature measurements for diagnosis of fever and for monitoring the course of temperature in relation...
متن کاملThe Sizes of Kuiper Belt Objects
One of the most fundamental problems in the study of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) is to know their true physical size. Without knowledge of their albedos we are not able to distinguish large and dark from small and bright KBOs. Spitzer produced rough estimates of the sizes and albedos of about 20 KBOs, and the Herschel space telescope will improve on those initial measurements by extending the sa...
